Family Activities in the Temiskaming Shores Area

The City of Temiskaming Shores, the Town of Cobalt and their surrounding areas are very safe, friendly communities suited for family activities. This region has a few beaches, picnic areas, parks and attractions and activities for people of all ages. Our region is perfect for the Canadian family getaway you’ve always wanted.
Beaches, Picnic Areas and Parks
Cobalt, Temiskaming Shores and surrounding area are very welcoming and family-friendly. There are many beaches, picnic areas and parks for all ages. For example, close to the Haileybury Beach, there is an outdoor jungle gym for younger school-aged children to play on. New Liskeard features a state-of-the-art skate park for older kids – but always remember to wear a helmet! In Cobalt, just a few years ago, a mini-putt park was built; this one’s particularly neat because each green features a historic building from the town of Cobalt!
Bass Lake in Coleman Township (just a short drive outside of Cobalt) has always been a local favourite – probably due to the shallow beach’s soft sand. The Haileybury Beach, which is on Lake Temiskaming, is also popular. It is staffed with lifeguards during the summer months and it has an awesome waterslide!
Attractions and Activities for School-aged Children
School-aged children will likely be interested in the local museums that display artefacts and give guided tours on various topics, revealing the region’s rich history. In Cobalt, enjoy the Cobalt Mining Museum: during the summertime, you can sign up for an interesting tour of a mine that was once fully operational, led by the Museum’s own tour guides. While you’re in town, take some time to check out the Bunker Military Museum and the Northern Ontario Firefighters’ Museum. In Haileybury, step inside an actual streetcar and catch a glimpse of Haileybury’s history at the Haileybury Heritage Museum. In New Liskeard, chat with staff about all things agriculture while visiting the Little Claybelt Homesteaders Museum.
School-aged children will also love swimming in our sandy beaches, practicing their skateboarding skills at the Carter Antila Memorial Skate Park, and eating yummy ice cream at Big Scoops, near the New Liskeard Beach, or R U Hungries, near the Haileybury Beach. During the winter months, take advantage of the public skating times at one of our arenas, or take a dip in our public pool at the Pool & Fitness Centre during the public swim times.
